I bassisti cantanti dovrebbero essere specie protetta: in circa 60 anni di storia del rock non se ne contano moltissimi – causa probabilmente l'oggettiva difficoltà tecnica dell'accompagnare col basso mentre esegui una linea melodica con la voce – ma, vuoi o non vuoi, quelli che ci sono stati hanno lasciato tutti il segno. Tra questi di sicuro Greg Lake, protagonista della stagione progressive, l'età adulta del rock coincisa con gli anni Settanta, quando ci si accorse che tre minuti erano troppo pochi per esprimersi in musica e la forma canzone finì fatalmente per inseguire suggestioni jazzistiche, sinfoniche o addirittura operist

Ha militato in due delle band fondamentali del genere, King Crimson ed Emerson Lake & Palmer e se n'è andato ieri, a 69 anni, seguendo di una manciata di mesi Keith Emerson che con lui condivise quest'ultima esperienza, toltosi la vita con un colpo di pistola lo scorso 11 marzo. Se n'è andato al termine di una «lunga e ostinata battaglia contro il cancro», come ha annunciato il suo manager. Per capire da dove veniva questo gentiluomo inglese che mai si arrese all'idea che il rock fosse una musica «popolare», tocca riavvolgere il nastro fino alla fine degli anni Cinquanta, quando incontrò Robert Fripp, futuro ideologo dei Crimson.

Frequentavano lo stesso maestro di chitarra che a lungo provò a indirizzarli alla musica classica. Ma il Regno Unito dell'epoca ribolliva di umori blues e rock and roll. «Sono orgoglioso di essere stato influenzato da gente con Elvis e Little Richard così come da compositori come Copland e Prokofiev», dirà un giorno. Nel novembre del 1968, dopo la fine del progetto Giles, Giles & Fripp che aveva portato a un disco di scarsa presa sul pubblico, è lo stesso Fripp a spingerlo dalla chitarra al basso per la sua nuova band, i King Crimson appunto, dove Lake avrà anche il compito di cantare. Un anno più tardi ne uscirà fuori «In the Court of the Crimson King», album manifesto del progressive con cinque lunghi pezzi che incrociano influenze classiche, suggestioni hard & heavy rock, passaggi strumentali all'insegna del più sfrenato virtuosismo, testi spesso esoterici.

Durante il primo tour negli Usa che vede i Crimson dividere i palchi con i Nice, Lake stringe amicizia con il tastierista della band, Keith Emerson. Contattato il batterista Carl Palmer (già con gli Atomic Rooster e The crazy world of Arthur Brown), i tre nel 1970 formano il power trio Emerson, Lake & Palmer, dove Lake può dar sfogo al suo talento di musicista suonando insieme chitarra e basso oltre a cantare. Ma Fripp che la sa lunga non vuole saperne di rinunciare al contributo dell'amico d'infanzia e, per il secondo album dei Crimson «In the Wake of Poseidon», gli chiede di cantare.

Prima ancora di avere un album fuori, il nuovo trio si esibisce con notevoli riscontri nell'agosto 1970 al festival dell'isola di Wight. Segue il debutto omonimo, dove accanto a strumentali con richiami a Bartok e Bach, trova posto una ballata acustica scritta proprio da Lake, «Lucky man», che diventerà il titolo dell'autobiografia del musicista. Seguono nella prima metà dei Settanta dischi difficilissimi eppure fortunatissimi («Tarkus», «Pictures at an exhibition», «Trilogy», «Brain salad surgery») e monumentali tour negli stadi. Tra i Paesi in cui il trio riscontra maggiore successo c'è l'Italia, seconda patria del progressive dopo la Gran Bretagna, grazie a band come Pfm, Area, Orme e Banco del Mutuo Soccorso.
Lake vedrà la sua stella eclissarsi con l'avvento del punk e del celebre slogan di Johnny Rotten («I hate Pink Floyd») che ideologizzava l'uccisione stessa del prog. Non mancheranno reunion al sapore di nostalgia, nei decenni a venire, con la consapevolezza che erano ormai acqua passata quegli anni Settanta in cui tutto sembrava possibile. Anche suonare il basso, cantare e vendere 48 milioni di dischi da un capo all'altro del pianeta.
